Robotic Bladder Cancer Surgery Turkey (Robotic Cystectomy)

How is robotic surgery performed?

Many abdominal cancer surgeries can be performed with minimal side effects using the Da Vinci robotic system. The surgery is completed thanks to miniature but highly functional hand instruments guided by robotic arms via 8 mm tubes and excellent visualization.

Robotic Bladder Cancer Surgery Turkey (Robotic Cystectomy)

The robotic arms move via a console controlled by the surgeon at the patient's side. The surgeon has complete control. However, tissues that the surgeon's hand cannot reach and the eye cannot see can be easily accessed and viewed thanks to the robotic system.

How is robotic bladder surgery performed?

Entry into the abdomen is made through 8 mm tubes placed just above the navel, and two more tubes placed on either side, for a total of approximately 5 tubes. The bladder is separated from the surrounding tissues thanks to the excellent precision of the robotic arms.

Vessels and nerves are protected by clearer visualization. Blood loss is less. The incision is also smaller compared to open surgery. In men, during bladder cancer surgery, the prostate and seminal vesicles are also removed along with the bladder. In women, the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes are removed along with the bladder.

Who is suitable for robotic bladder cancer surgery?

Robotic bladder cancer surgery (robotic cystectomy) is suitable for patients with advanced bladder cancer who need to have all or part of their bladder removed. This surgery, called cystectomy, is usually necessary in T2 stage bladder cancer that has spread to the muscle tissue of the bladder.

How long does robotic cystectomy surgery take?

The duration of robotic bladder cancer surgery varies depending on the surgeon's experience, patient factors (history of previous surgery and radiotherapy),and the method used to create a urinary tract (ortotopic bladder, ileal loop, etc.) after the bladder is removed. It is a major surgery with an average duration of 6 hours.

What are the advantages of robotic surgery in bladder cancer?

Just like in robotic prostate cancer surgery, in bladder cancer surgery, robotic arms that can move 540 degrees and operate in 7 axes, eliminate hand tremors, and provide excellent optical magnification can offer advantages such as less bleeding, better nerve preservation, smaller incisions, less pain, and therefore faster recovery.

Can erection be preserved with robotic cystectomy?

In suitable patients where the tumor is not widespread, nerve-sparing robotic surgery can positively contribute to erectile capacity. Similarly, in female patients, the vagina and surrounding tissues can be better protected.

Ortotopic bladder with robotic surgery

As in open surgery, after the bladder is removed, a new urinary tract is created using various methods. This can be done with a bag opened in the abdomen (urostomy, ureterocutaneoustomy) or with a new orthotopic bladder created from the intestine. The precise touch of Da Vinci robotic surgery can be used for all these methods.

Cost of robotic cystectomy

The price of robotic cystectomy surgery for bladder cancer may vary depending on the hospital's conditions, insurance agreements, the patient's insurance coverage, and the surgeon's experience and areas of expertise. Average cost is 25000 dollars in Türkiye with hospital accomodation.
