It is the abnormal enlargement of the veins that provide blood flow in the testicle. Thus, dirty blood pools in these veins and the testicle, causing dysfunction in the testicle.
Varicocele is the most important known cause of male infertility. Roughly 1/3 of infertility is caused by male factors, 1/3 by female factors, and 1/3 by unknown causes. When the pathologies that cause infertility in men are listed, varicocele comes first.
Varicocele is the most important cause of correctable infertility. There is usually an improvement in sperm production after varicocele surgery. For this, at least 3 months must pass after the surgery.
The purpose of varicocele surgery is to correct existing infertility. By performing this surgery, we try to solve infertility instead of causing infertility. Varicocele surgeries can sometimes be performed due to pain caused by varicocele disease. In this case, damage may occur to the artery that provides blood flow to the testicle and the function of the testicle may be impaired. However, in microscopic varicocele surgery, this possibility is very low and it is the safest and most successful surgical method.
Is everyone with varicocele infertile?
No it is not. There may be no deterioration in sperm parameters, especially in men with low-grade varicocele disease. These patients are checked only at regular intervals. Surgical intervention is usually not required.
A significant portion of couples experiencing infertility due to varicocele pathology have successful pregnancies after varicocele surgery. Microsurgical varicocele surgery, in particular, has a high success rate.
Deteriorations in sperm quality caused by varicocele begin to improve approximately 3-6 months after varicocele pathology is intervened. Approximately 45-50% of couples achieve natural pregnancy within 1 year after varicocele surgery.
In scientific studies, the success of IVF (in vitro fertilization) increases after microsurgery in men who have damage to sperm production due to varicocele. Even if IVF is to be applied in appropriate cases, varicocele surgery will be beneficial beforehand.
Deterioration in sperm parameters may occur in varicocele disease. It may cause infertility by decreasing sperm density in the ejaculate, decreasing sperm motility, and causing deformities in sperm cells.
In advanced varicocele disease, there may be a decrease in testosterone levels as well as sperm production. This can lead to erection problems and decreased sexual desire (loss of libido).
It is not possible for varicocele to go away on its own. The standard and effective treatment is microscopic varicocele surgery. In advanced disease, testicular function deteriorates and sperm production and the production of the male hormone testosterone decrease. The testicle may shrink and irreversible damage may occur. Even if it is to be followed without surgery, it should be done under the supervision of a urologist.
Since varicocele occurs as a result of anatomical deterioration in the veins of the testicle, it is not possible to correct it with herbal cures. The only treatment for this disease is to correct this anatomical disorder with surgery. There is not enough scientific evidence that the herbs mentioned in search engines, such as carob and horsetail, prevent varicocele.
One of the questions frequently asked by women trying to have children is whether couples whose spouses have varicoceles can have children. Varicocele disease is one of the pathologies with the highest treatment success in male infertility.
Patients who are candidates for varicocele surgery frequently search for the positive and negative effects of this surgery in search engines. We tried to answer frequently asked questions in this blog post. Publishing direct patient comments on medical websites is prohibited by the Ministry of Health.
The price of varicocele surgery varies depending on the surgical method applied, the experience of the surgeon and the conditions of the hospital (Ranges from 1500 to 3500 USD in Turkey)
